How To Properly Care For Your New Ear Piercings

While ear piercings are very common nowadays and generally considered quite safe, it is still very important to ensure that you are properly caring for your new piercings in order to prevent infection. Properly caring for your piercings will also ensure that the holes do not close so you are not forced to repeat the process. The five tips below can help you to accomplish these goals.

#1: Be Sure To Never Touch Your Ears Without Washing Your Hands

Even if your hands appear clean, there could still be millions of microscopic germs that you cannot see. These germs can cause your new ear piercing to become infected. That is why it is so important to always wash your hands before touching your ears.

#2: Do Not Remove Your Piercing Earrings Prematurely

When you visit a piercing studio, they will tell you exactly how long your piercing earrings should remain in place before they can be removed and replaced with the earrings of your choice. While it may be tempting to remove these starter earrings prematurely, it is important that you leave them in for the full recommended time. Removing them early will likely cause your holes to close and you will need to have your ears pierced all over again.

#3: Use Rubbing Alcohol To Clean Around The Piercings

Rubbing alcohol can help to prevent infection, ensure scabs do not form, and help promote healing. That is why it is a good idea to clean your new ear piercings with rubbing alcohol a few times each day until they have fully healed. This can be easily done by dipping a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol and using it to gently clean around the earring.

#4: Gently Turn Your Earrings Each Day

The last thing you want is for your new piercing to close around the earring that is already in your ear. That is why you should take the time to gently turn the earring at least once each day in order to keep the hole open and ensure that new skin is not able to attach itself to the earring post.

#5: See A Doctor If There Are Signs Of Infection

Even with proper care, there is always a risk of infection when getting a new piercing. If you experience severe redness, drainage from the piercing site, or a high fever, you will need to visit your primary care doctor or a dermatologist in order to ensure there is not an infection. Putting off seeing a doctor can result in an infection spreading to other parts of your body. Therefore, it is always better to be safe than sorry if you think there is a chance your new ear piercing could be infected.
